Beryl N. Grant

d. January 29, 2025

Beryl N. Grant, longtime resident of Altamont, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at the age of 95. She was the daughter of the late Clyde and Manieda Vernon (Schenectady) and sister of the late Donald Vernon. Beloved wife of the late Harold C. Grant (2022). Beryl and Hal were married for 70 years before Hal’s passing.

Beryl enjoyed family times together and raising their daughter and three boys together with Hal on Helderberg Avenue and later at Leesome Lane in Altamont. They also resided on Park Street for several years until Hals passing. The last few years Beryl has resided in Chestertown with her daughter Kathryn Davis and received loving and quality care. Kathi’s husband, Bob Davis, was also a loving caregiver and great friend to Beryl. His help was so appreciated. Beryl had a long career as Village Clerk of Altamont and municipal bookkeeper for the Village of Colonie and Town of Knox. She was a dedicated and very competent public servant her entire life. She graduated from Draper High School at the age of 15 and then went to Business school after that. She earned an Associate’s degree in her fifties outside of her work hours. She was always busy with something and helped many in the family with their taxes.

The family camp in Newcomb in the Adirondacks has been a family treasure since the 1960’s and Mom and family hold many fond memories of times there during all four seasons. She was active with many groups in the area; St. John’s Lutheran Church, Fellowship Club and Garage Sales at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Altamont and the Scottish Games working with Hal.

She was well read and often reading 2-3 books a week. She amazingly read as fast as she could type. She loved crossword puzzles, tennis, skiing, family time and cooking. The family cookbook is a treasured resource for us all and include our favorite mom recipes (chocolate Jumbos!) Together, Hal and Beryl created a great influence and loving, cherished relationships with their friends, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren that will last long into the future of our family. She was a true matriarch with her love to us all. Her loving guidance and support will never be forgotten for those lives she touched. Beryl and Hal would bring city kids up to camp (Fresh air program), hosting an exchange student from Germany while in their eighties and teaching Sunday school at St. Johns and an inner-city summer bible school in Schenectady.

Beryl is survived by her children; Kathryn (Robert) Davis, Lawrence (Sandy) Grant, Richard (Joyce) Grant and Bradley (Jana) Grant.  Also survived by her Grandchildren Matthew and Michael Phelps, Dennis Grant, Jessica Philips, Scott Grant, Rick Grant, Mark Grant, Heather Smith, Allison O’Connor, Brianna Grant, Natalie Grant; 14 great grandchildren, and two Great- great Grandchildren. Beryl was predeceased by her Great grandson Cody Phillips.
