BIDDEFORD, ME – Carl S. Schell, Sr. passed away January 11, 2017 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, Scarborough, ME, after a year-long illness.
Carl was born January 20, 1929 in Town of Wright in Schoharie County to Dorothy and Howard Schell. He graduated from Altamont High School in 1945 and was a member of the Altamont Reformed Church. He and his wife Florence raised their family in Altamont, NY. He was a store manager for the F.W. Woolworth Company for 42 years before retiring in 1989 and moving to Maine. He managed stores in Syracuse, Binghamton, Cohoes, Schenectady, Niskayuna and Delmar, NY. He served as a Corporal in the 25th Infantry Division and saw service during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952. He earned three bronze stars for valor in combat. He was a member of the American Legion and of the 25th Infantry Division Association.
He was married to Florence Zampino Schell for 62 years. In addition to his wife he is survived by his children Linda Marks (Douglas) of Dorset, VT and Tucson, AZ, Carl Schell, Jr. (Susan) of Delmar, NY, and Cindy Pulire (Michael) of Scarborough, ME; six grandchildren, Charles Pulire (Courtney), Jessica Wilcox (Jeffrey), Jeffrey Coseo (Lara), Nicholas Pulire (Jillian), Eric Schell (Ashley), Christopher Schell who is to be married to Mary Wombacker, ten great-grandchildren; a brother Warren Schell (Mildred) of Stillwater and a sister in law Mildred of VA; and ten nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Howard (Mildred).
Calling hours will be at the Fredendall Funeral Home, 199 Main Street in Altamont, NY on Monday, January 16 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and a service of remembrance will take place on Tuesday, January 17 at 11:00 at the Fredendall Funeral Home.
