Charles Keith Shultes, 93, of Shadow Lake Village, passed away of natural causes January 20, 2009 at Riverview Medical Center. Born on July 16, 1915 in West Berne, NY, the first child of Verni and Mertie Shultes, he grew up on their farm, entered RPI as a teenager and received his Bachelor and Masters degrees in Electrical Engineering there.
He entered the Federal Government at Fort Monmouth, NJ in 1939 and was assigned to Office of the Chief Signal Officer at the Pentagon, Arlington, VA in 1940. There he met and on October 22, 1944 married co-worker Kathryn Crane of Port Jervis, NY. In 1945 he returned to Signal Corps Engineering Laboratories at Fort Monmouth, NJ. There he became Civilian Director of Evans Signal Laboratory and Electronic Warfare Laboratory, retiring June 30, 1973. He traveled extensively in the US and abroad both for the government and after retirement with his wife. They enjoyed a wonderful thirty year retirement on Warners Lake in East Berne, NY, before moving back to NJ in 2003.
Surviving are wife Kathryn, son James and Tina of Covington, GA; daughter Mary Ann and Charles Lingle of Sammammish, WA; son Scot and Leona of Middletown, NJ; grand daughters and spouses Brandy and Geoffrey; Suzanne and Dennis; Kathryn, and great grandchildren Giselle and Hayden Garbaccio, and Kamalani Earley. Also surviving are sisters and their families, William and Margaret Hayden of East Berne, NY and Bernice Bunzey of Berne, NY.
A celebration of Keith's life will be held on Saturday, January 24, at 3pm at Middletown Reformed Church, 121 Kings Highway, Middletown. Funeral services will be held at Lutheran Parish Church, Berne, NY in the Spring followed by interment in Woodlawn Cemetery there. The family requests that those wishing to do so may make donations in Keith's name to the Lutheran Parish Church, Berne, NY 12023.
