Herbert G Schaible
Altamont - Herbert Schaible, 83, passed away 17 Dec 2012, after a long battle with Parkinson Disease.
Herb was born on 29 June 1927 in Altamont New York, to Blanche and Fred Schaible. He was born in the old Severson house on Brandle road. When Herb was born, his father Fred and Dr. Cullen were fishing at Warners Lake, so Herb was delivered by a midwife, Annie Reed.
He graduated from Altamont High School in 1945. Herb then enlisted in the Army in Sept 1945, were he attended the Armored Services School, at Fort Knox Kentucky. He achieved the rank of technician 4th grade and spent his last year of service in Italy.
After coming home from the war, Herb, attended Albany Business College. After, he was hired as a bookkeeper for Ward G Ackerman Lumber Company. Herb spent his professional career in the Lumber industry. After Ward G Ackerman, he was employed by, Paulson Lumber and Millwork Specialties. He retired at the age of 65 years old.
Herb married his bride, Barbara (Bobbie) Joan Mattice from Warners Lake on July 14, 1951. They had 3 children: Ruth Pollard, (husband James of Altamont New York), Barbara Lynn Bradt, (husband Douglas of Scotia New York) and Mark Schaible, (wife Kathy of Esperance New York). He also had 4 devoted grandchildren: Amy Pollard, Brian Pollard, Amanda Schaible, and Abby Schaible.
Herb and family enjoyed the company of Kelly and Jackie Warner and family of Altamont.. They enjoyed many years of camping and traveling together.
Herb was a devout member of the Altamont Reformed Church for 75 years. Herb sang in the Choir for over 51 years and also served as the Sunday School Superintendent, teacher and was also the youngest person elected to the consistory. Herb was also a member of the American Legion Boyd Hilton Post for over 50 years. He served in many roles at the Post to include Commander. He will be most remembered at the Post for his 40 years of conducting and calling Bingo every Tuesday Night. Herb served both the Church and Legion, by working for many years at the Altamont Fair, for both the Church Restaurant and American Legion Food booth.
After his retirement, Herb became a member of the Altamont Senior Citizens, and drove the Senior Van for a number of years.
During his free time, Herb loved to play cards (especially Poker) ,pinochle and Rummy. He also enjoyed fishing, playing golf, pitching horseshoes, and reading Westerns (especially Louis Lamor).
Herb was predeceased by his brother Harold Schaible of Nebraska, Robert (Bob) Schaible of Berne and sister Marion Schaible of Altamont. He is survived by his brother Howard (Howie) Schaible of Washington.
Herb's family wants to thank the entire staff at Baptist Health Nursing Rehabilitation Center, for the loving care and compassion they gave to Herb over the last two and half years.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Herb's life on Saturday at 1:00 pm at the Altamont Reformed Church, 129 Lincoln Avenue, Altamont New York. Burial of Herb's cremains will be held in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Altamont Reformed Church Choir fund.
