Altamont- Neil A. Taber, 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday May 5, 2019, after a courageous battle with several medical conditions that had developed over his last year and a half. Neil was an active, loving, family man who strongly believed in civilly serving his country and community. Neil grew up in Knox in a family of seven boys. He became a charter member of the Knox Fire Department as a young man. Long with his identical twin brother, Neil joined the Army Airforce before finishing High School to serve WWII.
Neil married his loving wife Dorothy in 1949 and soon starting raising a family of four boys bad two girls in a home they bought on Altamont Blvd., where he has since lived with his wife. Neil was dedicated to and worked hard to support his family. He retired from GE after 34 years as a steam fitter. He also worked part time for the Altamont Police Department and Albany County Sheriff's Department. Neil proudly served as the Altamont Village Justice for 32 years. Neil was a member of the Altamont Fire Department for over 25 years and during his retirement he served many years as the daytime driver for the Altamont Rescue Squad.
Neil had a fun side to him. He was the pilot for the Albany Skydivers for many years where he had many exciting experiences. Neil enjoyed many hobbies with his family and friends that included: golfing, bicycling, hunting, fishing, boating, piloting full sale Cessna's and RV model airplanes/helicopters. Neil was also the long -time president of the Helderberg Rod and Gun Club where the trap field is named in his honor.
Neil is survived by his beloved wife Dorothy; his children Gregory N. Taber, Gary D. Taber, Shelly E. Taber, Ronald L. Taber and Randel E. Taber; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Neil was predeceased by his daughter Beth Conway Taber.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 from 4-7PM at Fredendall Funeral Home, 199 Main Street, Altamont, NY with a service to follow with Rev. Gary Taber officiating. A committal service will be held Thursday, May 9, 2019 at 11:30 AM in the chapel at Oakwood Cemetery, 186 Oakwood Avenue, Troy, with interment to follow.
