Phyllis Kreager Schilling A long time resident of Altamont died peacefully on July 10, 2012, age 86. Phyllis Schilling is survived by her children John (Linda) Schilling of Lafayette, IN; Carl Schilling of Altamont; Lisa (Michael) Hatch of Milwaukee, WI; Stephanie Schilling of Guilford, CT; grandchildren Carrie Meyer, Stuart Hatch, Andy Hatch and Gillian Hatch, and great-grandchildren Lauren Meyer, Gavin Meyer, and August Hatch. She was predeceased by husband John N. Schilling, Jr. and grandson John A. Schilling. Phyllis was born in Saugatuck, Michigan, and met her husband while a student at University of Michigan in 1945. The couple settled in Altamont in 1952 where they raised their family. After she retired from Farnsworth Middle School, Phyllis served as village trustee from 1983 to 1998 and joined the Albany County Cornell Cooperative Extension's Master Gardener program in 1986. She worked on the landscaping for many village projects including Orsini Park, Benjamin M. Crupe Bozenkill Park, and Schilling Park. A lifelong lover of the outdoors, Phyllis enjoyed swimming, ice skating, tennis, and walking throughout Altamont. She cherished the views of the Helderberg escarpment and worked to preserve its beauty. The family is grateful to the caring staff of Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center and is particularly thankful for the loving friendship of Sally Dague and Kristin Casey. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 15, 2012, at St. John's Lutheran Church, at 12:30pm 140 Maple Ave., Altamont, NY.
