Sophia S. Wowk, daughter of the late Kateryna and Henry Wowk, born in Ukraine on February 21, 1927 passed to eternity on November 2, 2010 in Windham, New York. Sonia was a member of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Jewett, New York and a long time resident of Windham--formerly employed as child care coordinator for Ski Windham. She was pre-deceased by her parents and brother Nestor Wowk, who was shot by Russian KGB in 1941. Sonia and her mother were both survivors of 10 years exile in concentration prisoners camp in Mordovia, in West Central Russia.
Funeral arrangements are by Decker Funeral Home on Main Street, Windham, New York. The Panachyda (memorial service) will be Friday, November 5, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial mass will be held Saturday, November 6, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, Route 23 A, Jewett, NY; internment immediately following the mass at St. Frances de Sales Cemetery in Elka Park.
In lieu of flowers, contributions made be made to the Hospice of Greene County, The Ukrainian Church, or The American Cancer Society.
